Thomas Peacock was the first Licensee of the Chequers from 1769 to 1770. The Pub was then run by members of the Cross family for the next 20 years. The building is a beautiful timber framed Tudor building, thought to have been built around 1509. With its low ceilings, open fire, ambient decor & lighting, I’m sure you will agree it is the most welcoming & comfortable pub in the High street.
We have a combination of traditional sofas and benches together with bar stools if that’s what you prefer. Whatever your choice you can rest assured there will be something to suit your taste and make your visit a pleasant experience.
All our food is freshly prepared on our premises using local produce where possible. Hot snacks, Jacket Potatoes, Soups and specials every day.
There is outdoor seating in our heated patio area at the rear of the pub which is also a great area in the summer too. Att the front of the pub there is also a number of seats available where you can sit and watch the world go by. It could be that you prefer to stand and chat and the choice is yours. With our regular quiz (see below) , accoustic and live band nights, there is something to cater for everyone.
All of the above, along with our well trained and well presented staff results in The Chequers living up to its commonly known name as ‘The Best Pub In Billericay‘!
