BRISTOL

“The Shakespeare Tavern in Prince Street is the longest serving ale house in Bristol”…..

It derives its name from the Theatre Royal in nearby King Street.

Shakespeare Tavern-Bristol interior

The Shakespeare offers 5 cask ales / 3 draught ciders / 4 draught lagers / over 15 different types of wine.

Prince Street itself is named after Prince George of Denmark, consort of Queen Anne. The original Georgian mansion was a merchant house designed by architect John Strachan in 1725. In 1777 the Shakespeare Tavern finally became a dockside inn supplying refreshment for ship workers and warehousemen. It’s longest serving licensee was William Allen circa 1934, retired 1976.
